What Is Normcore?

by Shunzhi Nie 04 Jul 2024

Because of social media and glossies, sometimes it seems that following fashion is a must for a person who wants to look good. Allegedly, once a season it is necessary to go through the closet and buy trendy things to add relevance. Stylists' pages are peppered with "out of fashion/classic/trend" picks.

But the following fashion is a hobby, not a necessity. Just as no one is obliged to collect stamps, so no one should look for the very best in which Bella Hadid appeared at the party. Clothes should first and foremost fulfill their main functions - to keep you warm and cover the parts of your body you don't want to show.

However, not following fashion can be as hard for some as following the trend. That's because stores often offer just on-trend clothing that can be difficult to combine with the rest of your clothes and unclear how to wear. For those who want to avoid any difficulties, there is the normcore style. Although, unlike barbicore, mermaidcore, and officecore it turned out to be the most down-to-earth and banal because it glorifies simplicity, rationality, and awareness. White T-shirt, denim pants, skin-tight jeans - the new era of normcore is officially back this year. We tell you what normcore aesthetic is and how to wear it.

What Is Normcore Fashion?

Imagine a celebrity who spent the whole evening strutting down the red carpet in high and wildly uncomfortable heels in a very tight dress, with her head covered in nail polish, with a ton of makeup on her face, and the need to smile 32 teeth at all the paparazzi. Then the person goes home, strips off all that luxury and status, and puts on infinitely comfortable jeans or joggers, a t-shirt or sweatshirt, and Uggs or sneakers. Can you imagine that? That, in short, is the normcore style.

Normcore is a fashion trend characterized by basic clothing for the "tired of fashion". The term itself is a hybrid of the words "normal" and "hardcore". At the heart of the trend is a rejection of extravagance and an attempt to stand out. Being the complete opposite of the haters of the mainstream, supporters of this style accept the banality of simplicity, without seeking to express their individuality and originality.

The essence of the normcore philosophy is that clothes are not given to us to make us stand out among others. Each person is unique in himself, and it does not matter how fashionable or expensive he is dressed. Clothes should be comfortable and simple, and it is not necessary to change half of your closet every season, nor is extravagance necessary. The concept itself originally had a more global meaning: the main thing is not what you wear, but who you are. According to the material, looking the same did not mean being like the others, because each person is individual by nature.

When Did Normcore Become Popular?

In order to make sense of the style's newfound popularity, it's worth looking at its history. It is essentially a response to the fast fashion, conspicuous consumption, and logomania of the 2010s, as well as the hipster culture of disliking what has become too popular, a phenomenon that, surprisingly, dates back hundreds of years and has its roots in the idea of "rational dress" popular in the Victorian era.

The fashion of the 2010s as a reflection of the social mood took the basis of this characterization and added its own peculiarities. The general attitude towards things through normcore manifested itself in a deliberate acceptance of sameness as a new way of being fashionable, while the desire for authenticity was denied.

The World Economic Crisis also had an impact: the normcore that emerged replaced the period of oversaturation of the noughties, carrying the roots of the minimalism of the 90s. This transition from maximalism to minimalism is quite typical for the change in fashion trends when consumers "burn out" from the search for freedom of expression, diversity, and extravagance.

As early as 2022, the first hints of normcore's return began to appear. Prada's alcoholic T-shirt, which appeared on the catwalk in 2022, was repeatedly recognized as one of the most popular things according to The Lyst index and became the leader of all wish lists, despite the cost of almost $1,000.

One of the brightest representatives of normcore fashion at that time was Steve Jobs, whose closet consisted mainly of a black turtleneck, Levi's jeans, and gray pairs of New Balance sneakers. But despite his indifference to fashion, the entrepreneur wore Issey Miyake knitwear (read also: Fashion Genius: Issey Miyake's most fantastic outfits that will turn your mind upside down). This is the main paradox of normcore - to construct a basic image by combining expensive items of clothing.

Birkenstocks and sneakers, joggers and panamas, belted bags, and simple unisex shirts - the relevance of these and similar things shows that normcore, which began to take shape a decade and a half or two decades ago, is still with us today.

What Is Normcore in 2024?

Today's iteration of this trend, dubbed "quiet luxury," differs significantly from true normcore fashion. Although both trends favor simplicity, quiet luxury retains a touch of elitism that normcore lacks.

It breaks templates and tears down labels, it finds liberation in not being anything special purely outwardly. Both trends, however, act as an antidote to the sharp-trending seasonal fashion fads, which still have to figure out how to style and what to wear. What goes into a basic normcore set?

If you like the philosophy of normcore, you can try it on for yourself. Although with no small probability, it will turn out that in your closet and so there are things from which you can make at least one image in this spirit. So, the basic rules of normcore:

1. The main thing in clothes - comfort and functionality
This means that you do not need to agonize, about getting up every day in high heels or squeezing yourself into too-tight jeans. Normcore clothes should be comfortable, they should be seasonally appropriate - that's basically all the requirements.

2. Brands and prices are not important
It doesn't matter whether you bought your favorite jeans in an expensive store, found them in the nearest second-hand store, or sewed them with your own hands. The main thing is that you like them and feel comfortable in them, whether you're at work or walking the dog. Eye-catching brand names and other moments that unambiguously speak about the price and status of clothes are not welcome in normcore.

3. Brevity
Rich decorative details, pretentious non-functional elements and other, perhaps, original, but not having applied sense decoration of clothes - this is not normcore. The images in this style are simple and laconic, silhouettes are clean and clear, and the colors used can be described by the words "calm gamma": gray, blue, black, brown, white, beige, and so on. Preference is given to monochrome clothes or dimly restrained prints.

4. Unisex
Normcore is not peculiar to the division of mankind into men and women. In clothing in this style, there are many things unisex, from beanie caps to coats and sneakers. Therefore, to create a look in the spirit of normcore is quite possible to borrow from your husband, brother, or boyfriend, for example, a plaid shirt or jeans - or buy something in the men's department of the store, if the thing fits well.

5. Nostalgia plays a key role
In normcore are welcome things with a nostalgic character or clothes a la vintage (by the way there will be some shabby), as well as sports and "working" style. With all this normcore is not obliged to look sloppy or ugly. Even its sub-category "high normcore" is distinguished, in some ways close to minimalism mixed with smart-casual, when all things are simple in cut and color combinations, but qualitatively made of good materials.
