What to Wear in Italy in Summer?

by LiWenshan 12 Dec 2023

Get ready to travel to Italy this summer! I believe that traveling will soon be possible. I'm living those dreams! And while you're dreaming and planning, I want to tell you how to dress in Italy in summer. It's not as easy as it may seem. There are several factors to consider before traveling to Italy. Climate and weather - yes, traditionally. But also, if you don't want to fall foul of Italian fashion experts, you should familiarize yourself with the latest fashion trends and features of Italian style. In addition, Italy is a very versatile country. Rest here can also be very different - from sightseeing, including Catholic churches with their own rules, to a relaxed beach vacation. Therefore, you need to decide what exactly you will do so as not to pack your entire closet on the road.

The appearance of Italian women usually causes a slight envy of other women. At any age, they manage to look elegant and stylish. When everything around melts under the sun's rays, people seem fresh and vibrant in Italy in summer. Their stylish tricks are worth taking note of this summer. Italian women are always dressed as if each has a personal stylist. At the same time, neither girls, young women, nor ladies of elegant age ever put on all the most fashionable things simultaneously. They can give modernity and relevance to even those clothes purchased several seasons ago with one, sometimes barely perceptible stroke. So why does the world recognize that it is women from the Apennines in any situation and in any clothes that look stylish and refined? Perhaps it is a matter of instinct because Italy is considered the birthplace of modern fashion.

What's the Weather like in Italy in Summer?

The climate in Italy is very different depending on the region. In the north and center of the country, it is subtropical Mediterranean, and in the south, it is temperate. The Alps are a barrier to the north and west winds. Summers are hot, temperatures can be above 35, and precipitation is rare. In my region of Veneto, there is also high humidity. It can also be windy in summer. In the off-season, the weather can change several times a day, so it's important to consider how to dress in Italy in summer.

I'm not too practical when packing my suitcases. Even if I go somewhere for the weekend, I often take more stuff than I'll wear. But I don't regret it. If I travel alone, gallant Italians will never leave me with a huge suitcase. It's much worse for me if, on a certain evening, I want to wear a dress that matches my condition, and I don't have it in my suitcase. Also, only take your favorite things, not the ones you doubt.

Pack the standard kit if you want to visit Italy in summer - a couple of shirts, t-shirts, swimwear, something long-sleeved, a warm jacket, and dresses for the evening. The sun can be aggressive, so a hat, sunglasses, long light pants or skirts, and lightweight, long-sleeved sweaters won't hurt. A hat and a light scarf will also protect you from wind and dust. Choose natural fabrics such as cotton and linen. They are ideal in the heat. However, consider whether you will be able to iron your clothes. If you visit Catholic churches, remember that your legs and shoulders should be covered there. Three pairs of shoes are enough - heels for going out, comfortable sneakers for walking around the city, and sandals or flip-flops for the beach.

Italy Summer Style Essentials

Monochrome Clothing to Wear in Italy in Summer
In ordinary life, Italian women choose monochrome from delicate pastels to saturated shades. Base colors take the leading positions here. Special attention is paid to white - it chicly shades the swarthy skin of local beauties. In second place are all shades of beige, noble, and elegant. Black completes the top three. Italian women try to avoid bright and shouting outfits. If on the street, clomping heels is a lady in a colorful sundress and a wide-brimmed straw hat, most people around will take her for a tourist. Even the summer closet of natives of the Apennine Peninsula mainly consists of monochrome outfits of calm colors. A black dress fitted to the figure looks perfect in a fancy restaurant and village fair.

T-shirt to Wear in Italy in Summer
Italian women are sure the classic white T-shirt can perfectly combine with anything. With jeans or loose pants, it will create a cool casual image. And if you put it on with black pants and a smart jacket, you will get a more formal outfit. The main rule is to buy an expensive T-shirt made of quality cotton. It will not stretch for a couple of socks or look sloppy.

Pants to Wear in Italy in Summer
Loose cotton pants in a dark blue shade are a great option for an evening in hot Italy. When choosing clothes for your trip to stuffy countries, don't forget about the quality of the fabric. It is the main criterion of how comfortable you will be on your trip. Things made of natural materials will always be nicer and more comfortable than synthetic ones. That's why our friends for summer are linen, cotton, and quality viscose. Putting on shoes with a heel, you can go to a restaurant or theater, and shoes with a flat sole will be perfect for long walks and excursions. And don't forget, in any look, you can put on or take off your outerwear - in our case, it's a denim jacket.

Shorts to Wear in Italy in Summer
Voluminous bermudas of gentle blue color will add colors to the capsule. They are comfortable, not hot at all, and represent this summer's current silhouette - oversized shorts tightened with a belt at the waist. They also go well with the white tops, and an orange T-shirt combined with blue shorts act as a complementary duo, on the same principle as in the following image with pants. In the previous selection with the linen skirt, the combination with the orange t-shirt was analogous, so the colors looked harmoniously together. We also change the belt on the shorts to white or brown and, accordingly, pick up a bag and other accessories.

Linen Skirt to Wear in Italy in Summer
This neutral beige skirt will go well with all the tops in the capsule: white and orange. It can be worn with flat shoes or small, stable heels. You can also change the belt in the skirt. It will add completeness to the image, as rag belts usually look unkempt and can spoil the overall look. For the evening, if it gets cooler, take a voluminous denim jeanshirt of milky color.

Dress to Wear in Italy in Summer
A bright lemon dress will also add color to the capsule. And even the simplest, at first glance, the style will be decorated with stylish accessories. By the way, the rule of combining yellow metal only with yellow and white with white has long been outdated. You can safely mix different color coatings in one image.

Accessories to Wear in Italy in Summer
To make monochrome outfits not look boring, Italian women "pump up" the image with the help of jewelry, silk scarves, expensive sunglasses, luxury handbags, and unusual hats. The main thing is that the elements should be combined. Even ladies over 50 are not shy about appearing in public with an eye-catching bag or frivolous scarf. Italian women prefer heavy chains, pendants, and earrings made of gold or other precious metals when choosing jewelry. Against the background of a monochrome outfit, such details look especially winning.

What to Pack for Italy in Summer: Shoes

Popular shoes are open sandals or comfortable shoes on thin platforms. Italy has many shoe brands and designers so that you can find shoes for every taste. Cobblestone Italian streets, heat, and stilettos don't go well together. That's why platform sandals and sandals have become an integral part of the summer closet of almost every Italian woman. Local women are especially fond of sandals with a bridge between the toes. But not simple versions of plastic or other cheap materials, and leather models with neat decorations. Such shoes are perfect for light summer outfits.

Dress Code in the Summer for Women and Girls

Locals and tourists can enjoy the warm sunshine and beautiful beaches in Italy in summer. Due to the high temperatures in summer, clothing is most important for comfort and style. In Italy, this time of year is dominated by café culture, where people spend time in outdoor areas and cafes, so fashion plays a significant role.

In Italy, in summer, women choose lightweight sleeveless or short-sleeved dresses (less often with straps) or lightweight pants and skirts with blouses, shirts, and t-shirts. Very short skirts are not so popular. The colors are calm and neutral. They wear their favorite black, even in summer, but in combination with other colors.

In summer, images of Italian women prevail in light and airy materials, such as linen and cotton dresses, feminine sundresses, or chiffon blouses. Clothes are often bright and colorful, reflecting the sunny and joyful atmosphere of Italy in summer. The lengths of skirts and dresses can vary from mini to maxi.

However, it is worth noting that there is a certain concept of "correct dress" in Italy in summer. In some churches and monasteries, visitors may be asked to wear more closed clothing to visit. It is also worth noting that some restaurants and establishments may require more formal attire. As summer in Italy can be very hot, it is worth wearing a hat or sunglasses and using sunscreen. This will help to keep your skin healthy and protected from sunburn. In general, Italy's clothing style in summertime is very diverse but always characterized by elegance and comfort. Italians try to create their images with characteristic Italian charm and, at the same time, never forget about their individuality and comfort.
